Any discussion on food seasoning will always accompany some common seasonings like salt, pepper, chicken powder, white pepper, fish stock powder and monosodium glutamate (MSG) or Ajinomoto– which is a brand name, etc. There are a lot of ways and alternatives to enjoy hot & cold, sweet and savory foods without the need to use these seasonings.

Today, Food Central has introduced certain metrics and methods of Food Alternatives available in the kitchen to use other than just your regular salt because of the health concerns related to it.

  1. Cheese: One of the common seasoning alternatives we use instead of sprinkling salt into our salads or pasta. Parmigiano Reggiano in powdered form has less sodium content, hence less harmful. Ask your dairy supplier about such stuff before buying.
  2. Anchovies: These are one of the best sources for salt and provide the ‘feel’ of meat in your dishes. If you’re using canned anchovies, look at the Sodium content at the can label. If you got dried ones, avoid soaking them in water or wash them too long as they will lose much of their sodium. Consider washing them once and deep-fry, then pound into pieces.
  3. Dressings & Condiments: This could be as simple as mayonnaise or as flavorsome as your favorite thousand island sauce, tomato & chilly sauce, thai sauce, mixture of cream and teppan sauce, garlic + coriander + grinded chillies, basil leaves + anything you like etc.
  4. Acid-based items: Using lemon juice and olive oil, balsamic vinegar, Apple Cider vinegar to mix with your salads, marinate your meat items, cook them in your soup, mix them with dressings and condiments of your choice, and much more.
  5. Canned items: They can vary from pickled items to infused herbs with foodstuff like tomato and garlic. Pickles such as stuffed olives can be used. Also try cream cheese for an extra bang of richness.
  6. Pickled Vegetables: Kimchi is a great example for pickled vegetables that gives a spicy, sour yet cheese-influenced kick of knocking your tongue out. Also, Szechuan, pickled white cabbages, sauerkraut etc. can be used to accompany your steaks, baked chicken or salads.
  7. Spreads: They are used in substituting common food seasoning to raw items such as bread, desserts or pastries. Simply, a good Danish butter for your puff pastry, margarine for your bread and jam mix for your pastry items will save you from additional sugar.
